Karyotype

The chromosomes of a dividing cell photographed and then arranged in numerical order - used when looking for chromosomal abnormalities.


Keratin

A tough protein found in skin, hair, and nails.


Keratinisation

The process by which epidermal cells (forming the outer layers of the skin) become filled and strengthened by keratin.


Ketone Body

Chemicals sometimes found in the blood or urine, particularly in people with diabetes mellitus.


Kilocalorie

Amount of energy required to heat 1 kg of water through 1 Celcius degree. Also written as Calorie. Provides a useful measure of the energy content of food.


Korotkoff Sounds

Sounds heard over an artery when blood pressure is being measured with a sphygmomanometer. As the pressure in the inflated cuff is reduced, the blood begins to flow turbulently in the vessel, creating the sounds.
